Today’s WebFinds: iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma make Apple ID passkeys a breeze, just don’t let Elon tweet his way into bankruptcy. Also, new Twitter rules might hinder war crimes research, but Instagram’s upcoming Twitter competitor has us buzzing. And hey, tired of social media alternatives? Brandon Writes has some advice. Plus, a well-funded Christian group aims to roll back LGBTQ+ rights, and Michael Jordan scores big with the Hornets sale. Slam dunk! And more…
- iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma automatically generates Apple ID passkeys, now available on Apple․com and iCloud․com
- iOS 17 can tell you what’s wrong with your car using Visual Lookup
- Will Elon Lose Control of Twitter? — Puck “That’s a recipe for financial disaster, or bankruptcy, or both. Last time I checked, if a company has more than 12 creditors — as Twitter does — then any three of them can join together to put a company into an involuntary bankruptcy proceeding. And Elon is in danger here. At some point, the creditors he is mindlessly stiffing on a regular basis are going to get sufficiently pissed to throw Twitter into bankruptcy.”
- How new Twitter rules could hinder war crimes research and rescue efforts
- This is what Instagram’s upcoming Twitter competitor looks like “The new standalone app will be based on Instagram and integrate with ActivityPub, the decentralized social media protocol. That will theoretically allow users of the new app to take their accounts and followers with them to other apps that support ActivityPub, including Mastodon.”
- The Failure of Social Media Alternatives — Brandon Writes “I guess, I’ve just grown tired of all the complaining. I’m sick of folks complaining about platforms, but refusing to leave, or leaving and then refusing to shut up about the old platform. Folks, it’s just social media. If you really think it’s that important and you are that attached to it, then I’d recommend maybe spending some time doing something else, or possibly looking into some addiction assistance.”
- Well-funded Christian group behind US effort to roll back LGBTQ+ rights “But lurking behind efforts to roll back abortion rights, to demonize trans people, and to peel back the protections afforded to gay and queer Americans is a shadowy, well-funded rightwing legal organization, experts say. Since it was formed in 1994, Alliance Defending Freedom has been at the center of a nationwide effort to limit the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people, all in the name of Christianity. The Southern Poverty Law Center has termed it an “anti-LGBTQ hate group” that has extended its tentacles into nearly every area of the culture wars. In the process, it has won the ear of some of the most influential people in the US, and become “a danger to every American who values their freedoms”, according to Glaad, the LGBTQ+ advocacy organization.”
