iOS 10, iPhone 7, and macOS Sierra

Lots of excitement on the Apple front for the last couple of weeks. Here’s how all this affects me as a consumer user of Apple devices.

I have a 16gb iPhone 6 which I will be keeping rather than upgrading to a new iPhone 7. I have upgraded it to iOS 10 and is working great. I plan to hold off until next year when the 10th Anniversary iPhones come out. According to MacRumors:

2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone and Apple has something major planned to celebrate the occasion. We’re more than a year away from the launch of the iPhone 8, but because of Apple’s ambitious plans for the device, there are already an abundance of rumors hinting at the impressive features coming in the 2017 iPhone.

Rumors suggest it’s going to be a radical redesign, with an edge-to-edge display that does away with the top and bottom bezels where features like the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and the front-facing camera are housed. Instead, Touch ID and the camera may be built directly into the display, meaning there will be no Home button. Jony Ive has wanted to introduce an iPhone that looks like a single sheet of glass for several years, and 2017 may be the year that it’s possible.

This sounds pretty exciting to me. A lot more so than an iPhone 7 which really isn’t much different than my iPhone 6.

My iMac and MacBook Pro Retina are both on El Capitan. I’ve been reading reviews on the new features in macOS Sierra and honestly don’t see anything that would cause me to update my devices right away. For now, I’ll be sticking with El Capitan on both Macs. I’ll be a late adopter after all the kinks get worked out.
